Bosque Redondo Memorial - Fort Sumner, New Mexico

Bosque Redondo Memorial - Fort Sumner, New Mexico

Project overview

The story of the incarceration of the Navajo and Mescalero Apache in the 1860s is being told at the new memorial which opened with the Phase 1 exhibits in June of 2005. For two years Discovery Exhibits worked with an exhibit review committee from each of the tribes to make sure that the historic events were accurately explained with sensitivity and respect. The exhibits tell of life at Bosque Redondo for the native people and the military, and conclude with an overview of the Navajo Nation and the Mescalero Apache Tribe today.

Hundreds of Navajos and Mescalero Apaches joined Fort Sumner residents at the dedication.

Some families gathered to quietly and reverently read the story together.

Eleven original illustrations were created by Discovery Exhibits to show the significant events which marked the Long Walk of the Navajo and the Mescalero Apache experience. Consultations with the tribes ensured accuracy of content and color.
